The State of EV Shopping in 2024
At a recent visit to the NY Auto Show it was great to see how many electric vehicles were either present or being highlighted, but right at the main entrance was the Nissan Leaf. EVs have a come a long way since the Leaf was first introduced and it's worth highlighting how many options there are currently (that were present at the show at least) and just how wide of a range they cover.

EV Charging Equipment From Your Favorite Brands (And Their Partners)
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.Месяц назад
For first time buyers of electric vehicles one major consideration that must be made is how you're going to charge the car. Where to start? Well manufacturers are making an effort (either on their own or via partnership) to make sure you have options available and most are happy to have your new charging equipment have matching branding to your new car. Which of these models suits your fancy? E...

Supercharging A Kia EV9 Shows That Tesla Isn't Ready For The 800V Revolution... Yet.

If you were hoping that Supercharger access would revolutionize EV charging, well... There are a few things you should know. If on the other hand you have an 800V EV like a Lucid, Porsche, or a Kia, Hyundai, or Genesis... Then things are a bit different. You see, V3 Supe...

NACS/J3400's Support For 277V Charging Is A Huge Deal and Here's Why

No, Your EV Doesn't Regen "All The Power" Going Downhill

For some reason I hear this from a small number of folks out there whenever I talk about Ev efficiency in mountainous areas. "Mountains don't matter because you regen all the power going down." Nobody wants it because the range sucks, and the battery cooling system is air-cooled. They knew all the way back before 2016 that their EVs had poor cooling systems, and they didn't care about the problem until they made the Nissan Ariyia. The first generation Leaf has a passively cooled battery, which would cook itself at superchargers causing ev owners to replace the battery at 15-30k miles. First generation Leaf batteries normally have to be replaced at 80k miles, because even if you avoid supercharging, driving on a hot day will rapidly degrade the battery. Battery replacements do not bother to add an active cooling system, instead they use the air conditioner to cool the battery which Nissan has known for YEARS (Since 2019) that the air conditioner is not good enough to keep the battery cool, especially when being supercharged. Nissan Leaf owners of both generations of this vehicle should NEVER supercharge these cars if you want the battery to make it to 100k before the next battery change, which will cost you well over 14 grand. This battery problem is both the fault of the battery maker: Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC) for making a weak, defective crackable slurry material on the cathode of the battery cell and Nissan Engineers going cheap on the cooling system. (They knew better, but wanted to cut costs.) Nissan did do a good job in making a SAFE battery, this is one thing I will give them credit for. It is very rare to see a Nissan Leaf suffer from thermal runaway. The drivetrain is well built and solid. It's really not a good car to buy, because their battery just sucks and Nissan wants way too much money to replace it if you have to replace it. You can buy a used 2023 KIA EV6 with 25-30k miles on it for 25k USD, you get 310 miles of range on a 77 KWH battery. Right now this is a MUCH better option for people interested in EVS but dont want to spend a fortune.

    In India standard voltage is about 240 volts and peak loads above 6 kilowatts is compulsory three phase even to households. I use an EV myself but limit my home charging to 3.3 kilowatt charge, but all commercial fast DC chargers are supplied three phase from the grid and max out at 60 kilowatt fast dc charging.Edit: we don't use any transformer after the meter, it's illegal to install a transformer after the meter unless you are using a large industry where separate and approved installation are provided for.

    I loved my LEAF, and still miss it. If Nissan had just refreshed it with a bigger battery, a thermal management system, and a CCS1 fast charge connector… it would STILL be the EV frontrunner. I now drive a Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited AWD, which reminds me of the LEAF, and couldn't be happier. It is a much better EV than the Model 3 I drove for 6 years after the LEAF. Did Ford have any vehicles there? I'm in the market for a new van and the only electric options are the eTransit and eSprinter. Benz is more efficient and has a larger battery, but is expensive and takes 12.5 hrs to charge on 240V, which is crazy. The Ford is cheaper, with a smaller battery and less range, but still almost as long to charge.

    • @EVBuyersGuide
      @EVBuyersGuide 7 дней назад

      Ford had the Lightning, Mach E, and E Transit present. Depending on your use case, the charge rate might not be an issue for either van. If you use the whole battery every day and need it in less than 12.5 hours then you would run into issues. Otherwise, I can't see there being a problem. -Travis

A sunroof and rain guards are musts for my vehicles. The sunroof and windows are open any time the dogs are inside, unless there is heavy rain or it is below freezing, and they go almost everywhere I go, so probably 80% of the time a vehicle is in motion.

The main two questions: 1) Are EV sales really down Elon to fire the Superchargers team since it is no needed or it's market adjustment after insane 2022 prices? 2) When is to expected appearance on the market of EVs combining 4 main ingredients at their best: the practicality/versatility/comfort of a real car (Audi Etron), the proper software like in Tesla/Rivian or Android based Polestars, the proper charging speed like in Cybertruck or Hyundai Ioniq5 or Lucid Air, the affordable price like it was in Chevrolet Bolt EV?

    Good video. A ton of options out there. I just switched from a 2019 Audi e-tron to a new (Highlander) Tesla Model 3 RWD. My e-tron was declared a total loss after a relatively minor accident. Each is very nice in its own way, with the Audi being ideal for people who want to very slowly transition into EVs (pretty much feels and drives like an insanely smooth and luxurious, but regular Audi), and the Tesla being about the polar opposite. Went with the base Model 3, because the new Model 3 comes out of the box with an insane amount of features for its price (particularly after the tax incentives if you lease), and it is insanely fun to drive.

Also interesting that the regen is on the rear, also it’s great that the B mode is the same whatever state of charge you have and even if the engine is running. The only thing I’ve noticed is that if you’re in hybrid and step on it the engine kicks in and there is a mismatch between front and rear axle for a split second. Can be a bit alarming if you have steering lock on. But overall excellent vehicle apart from a couple of electrical gremlins.

A question I've always had with Volvo's plug-in hybrid system and still have is - do you still have AWD if your battery is empty? There isn't a drive shaft in between, so the engine can't drive the rear wheels directly. Is the engine generating electricity and sending it directly to the rear to drive the rear wheels?
